Booming Bauma bursts recession bubble

The world’s largest exhibition, the Bauma construction equipment show, having received over 415,000 visitors from more than 200 countries. The size of the 555,000m2 exhibition space and the 3,150 registered exhibitors from 53 countries hit record levels. The exhibition is by any measure a phenomenon, a huge expanse of new construction machinery that was spread out under the bright Bavarian weather. Visitor numbers proved so high on the first family day, Saturday, that the gates opened 15 minutes early to reduce the swelling throng at the entrances and the entrance then had to be closed later on in the day to help control numbers in the packed aisles. The strong numbers showed that the construction industry is on the upswing out of recession with equipment manufacturers and dealers having rationalised stocks and now being in a position to increase sales of new machines. Attendance was hit by the travel disruption that affected flights across much of northern Europe. India was the partner nation for the exhibition but the number of Indian visitors attending was low due to the issue over flights. Visitor numbers from other Asian nations such as China as well as from North America and Latin America were also hard hit. However European visitor numbers remained strong with many taking long trips by road and rail to attend the event, travelling from as far afield as the North of Sweden, Russian capital Moscow and the Turkish capital of Istanbul. In comparison to Bauma 2007, overall attendance was 17% lower; 65% of the visitors came from Germany, 35% travelled from countries outside Germany. Some of the events in the bauma Forum, which particularly in the first two days of Bauma 2010 had included many specials about the partner country of India, had to be cancelled or re-staffed. The show was also hit by a controversial legal battle between JCB and a number of Chinese firms. JCB took action due to suspicion of copying of its designs, although this was strongly denied by the Chinese firms. The 30th Bauma, International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment, will take place as planned in three years time, from 15th-21st April 2013 in Munich.
