Skyline shows wireless Automated Rotary Drum Sign System

Greg StadjuharSkyline Products Traffic Division has engineered one of the greenest traffic signs ever, designed to help reduce costs, CO2 emissions and congestion. The company is displaying this new eco-friendly, solar-powered, wireless Automated Rotary Drum Sign System at the ITS America Annual Meeting.

The cutting-edge technology was developed via a joint effort between Skyline, Texas DoT and Walter P Moore, with the goal of making travel through the El Paso metro area more efficient with respect to traffic incidents and closures on the interstate.

The sustainable signs feature both wireless technology and solar power, which means they require no fibre optic cable, and no hard-wired communications or power, making it possible to install them almost anywhere. In addition, the signs offer more flexible options for traffic diversion and deliver the benefits of improved traffic flow, such as reduced CO2 emissions.

“Eliminating the need to run power to each site, including trenching, conduit, power, labour and continued maintenance can plausibly save departments of transportation and taxpayers everywhere millions of dollars,” says Adam Lyons, regional sales manager at Skyline Products.

“This sign will last 40 years or longer,” adds Greg Stadjuhar, vice president, sales and marketing, Skyline. “It is simple to install and requires absolutely no maintenance.”

The Automated Rotary Drum Sign System is the only automated diversion sign of its kind, capable of displaying three alternating signs. Skyline produced 94 signs which are currently being installed along Interstate Highway 10, US 54 and Loop 375 in El Paso.
