ZF has developed a new electric drum mixer drive which is teamed with a battery to provide an energy source for truck mixer parts. The company is hoping that its CMe Ecomix Electric Mixer Drive will enable contractors to use zero emission mixers in city centres and downtown construction sites.

Udo Brehmer, manager industrial technology system architecture & reliability construction machinery systems at ZF, said the hydrostatic radial piston motor which drives the drum on the back of the truck has been replaced with an electric motor.

“We have just added another set of planetary gears in order to get the high reduction of speed because the electrical engine has got such high speed and you can only use 12 or 14 rpm on the concrete mixer drum,” he said.

According to ZF, the electric motor also allows the drum to move autonomously with no emissions while the engine is turned off at the construction site or mixer system. Brehmer explained that the company also has an electronic drive control unit which includes all the functions necessary for the safe operation of the drum.

“You can also buy a generator which is connected to the diesel engine of a truck and generate the power in the intermediate high-voltage circuit and charge the battery on the road or on the way to job site,” Brehmer concluded.
