Advantech is showcasing what it says is the only FirstNet-enabled wireless router on display at ITS America Annual Meeting. Authorised by Congress in 2012, FirstNet is a nationwide broadband network dedicated to first responders—allowing them to communicate during critical events when other communications networks tend to fail.

The ICR-3200 LTE gateway connects IP or serial devices to a cellular network. With an upload speed of up to 50 Mbps and download speeds of up to 150 Mbps, the router provides ample bandwidth for high data demand applications such as CCTV.

According to Ken Kao, director of the transportation sector for Advantech, the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) has deployed 400 units state-wide with plans to deploy 1,000 more in the next several months. The Texas Department of Transportation (TexDOT) and the New York Department of Transportation (NYDOT) are in the process of rolling out the router for their FirstNet broadband networks.

The ICR-3200 is extremely weather-resistant with no moving parts and no fans and is able to withstand temperatures from -40 to 75 degrees Celsius. It also has built-in redundancy and failover protection with two SIM card inputs—allowing the router to switch between carriers if one of them becomes unavailable.
