IRD’s TACS improves commercial vehicle safety

IRD Oregon_TACSInternational Road Dynamics (IRD) will be showcasing its Tire Anomaly and Classification System (TACS) at the ITS America Annual Meeting. TACS is an advanced screening technology that helps agencies identify vehicles with potentially dangerous tyre anomalies before accidents occur. The system measures the tyre-to-road contact patch and identifies unsafe tyres including flat, missing, and mismatched tyres on dual tyre assemblies.

TACS addresses a need to screen for tyre anomalies at weigh stations. Safety is the primary goal of commercial vehicle inspections, and tyre problems that are sufficiently concerning to place a vehicle out of service make up approximately two per cent of all commercial vehicles. Damaged tyres also lead to breakdowns, expensive roadside repairs and increased costs due to freight being delayed.

TACS integrates with existing screening systems and has been successfully implemented at truck weighing and vehicle inspection facilities in several jurisdictions across North America. Neil Klassen, VP of Engineering & Development at IRD, will be giving a presentation on Implementing Tyre Safety Screening at Weigh Stations as part of the Innovations in Truck Automation and Safety technical session on Wednesday, 5 June, at 3:30 pm.
