Q-Free’s Intelight opens up MIBs

Highlighting an unwavering commitment to standardising ATC controller specifications and open standards, Q-Free’s Intelight has publicly released the management information base (MIBs) for its Maxtime local traffic signal control software. This unprecedented release paves the way to advance the adoption of open protocols, giving customers access to all available objects within a controller, including proprietary ones.

The MIB essentially provides a common language for the central system and local controller software to communicate with, and control, traffic signals and other transportation management devices. Approximately half of the objects in a controller MIB used today for ATC controllers have been standardised by the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol.

But the remaining 50% of MIBs are defined by individual manufacturers and can restrict agencies or increase costs for organisations interested in central and local software from different vendors.

“Though companies have been known to share their MIB with other vendors, the agreements to do so can be limiting and unreliable,” said Tom Stiles, EVP of urban solutions for Q-Free America. “We asked ourselves, why do we do this? How does this benefit our customers and the communities they serve? When looking at it from this perspective, it was an easy and unanimous decision to publicise our MIB and make it accessible to anyone.”

Q-Free and Intelight believe that open standards promote innovation and better customer support, both of which can improve safety and mobility for the public. With this announcement, they say they continue to lead the industry in enabling customers to choose the best of all solutions.
