Southwest launches ActiveVision

Southwest Research Institute has released ActiveVision, a machine vision tool that transportation agencies can use to detect and report changes in traffic conditions. ActiveVision’s algorithms use machine learning with cameras to provide real-time data on weather conditions and other anomalies affecting congestion. No human monitoring is required for the subscription-based solution that Southwest says improves safety for rural highways, urban intersections and pedestrian walkways.

Designed for integration with intelligent transportation systems, ActiveVision can be configured with existing traffic cameras to analyse roadway conditions. The software continually observes traffic camera feeds from existing camera infrastructure and generates traffic condition alerts.

Software upgrades come at no added cost, according to Southwest. Third party applications include cell phone text alerts, 511 ATIS systems, e-mails, ATMS systems and open API.
