Guimu pavement robot rolling out globally

Robotics manufacturer Guimu says it is looking to expand sales of its popular pavement inspection robot outside of the domestic Chinese market.

Guimu’s Pavement Robotic Inspection System consists of a battery-powered GPS-guided robot that trundles along on four wheels at speeds up to 20km/h.

It can cover up to 7500m² in an hour, while the battery is good for up to eight hours on average, with a charging time of only four hours. Manufacturer Guimu is a three-year-old start-up originating out of Tsinghua University, a major research institute in Beijing. The robot is delivered to site in a specially modified truck that doubles as the robot’s remote control centre.

Now in its second generation, the current model weighs 600kg and measures 3155mm by 1750mm by 1860mm, and has an upgraded obstacle avoidance system with a range of up to 3m.

The majority of the robot’s work so far has been along airport runways, including those at Beijing International.

Ground penetrating radar in front and a high-resolution camera at the back allow visual inspection of runways and roads with a resolution of up to 1mm.

It can also carry out 3D modelling of pavement structures, roadbeds and roadside utilities such as pipelines, with inspection depths of 1-3m. Analysis can detect voids, cable ducts, looseness, hollows, sedimentation, cracks and subgrade moisture. Detection results can be customised to access the road’s information management system. While Guimu will sell the system, the company operates it as an on-demand service at most of the 49 sites in China where the robots work.
