Ibeo set to revolutionise lidar market

Ibeo Automotive Systems is here in the exhibition hall with a lidar product that the company says is a one-of-a-kind which will revolutionise the market for this technology and set completely new standards.

The company is showing a live demo of its IbeoNext sensor in public for the first time, promoting it as the next major step on the way to fully autonomous driving.

Ibeo’s 4D solid state lidar enables a detailed 3D model of the environment with moving objects. However, as well as the 3D model of reality, the device also displays an image of the environment, since different surfaces reflect the lidar laser beam to different degrees.

Accoding to Ibeo, this is the fourth property of every measured point in three-dimensional space, which is why developers and engineers at the company refer to “4D environment detection”.

Just two months ago, China’s largest SUV and pickup truck manufacturer, Great Wall Motor Company, nominated Ibeo as its lidar supplier.

IbeoNext will ensure Level 3 autonomous driving on production vehicles at Great Wall starting in 2021 and Level 4 autonomous driving from 2023. The 4D solid state lidar is also perfectly suited for non-automotive environments, such as automation in the maritime sector, agricultural machinery, mining vehicles or road sweepers.
