Ramboll-JennySimonsen-001Want to know why cycling is so popular in Denmark? To find out, you can take a virtual bike ride through Copenhagen with Ramboll Consulting on the ITS Nordic Pavilion.

“Cities should stop thinking about how to get more cars down a road and instead think of how many people they can get down a road,” says Ramboll’s Marianne Weinreich, who is also chair of the Cycling Embassy of Denmark.

“You can get seven times as many people down a street on bicycles as you can in cars,” she adds.

The Embassy’s aim is to show other cities and countries why cycling is so popular in Danish cities and how beneficial it is in terms of health (adults who cycle regularly have a 30% lower mortality rate) and cost effectiveness.

“For every kilometre travelled by bicycle instead of by car, society gains around €0.7 (US$0.77),” she says.

According to Weinreich, segregated cycle lanes are a must; in Denmark, cycle lanes are separated from footpaths and roads using kerbs.

While accepting reserving road space for cyclists can cause resentment from motorists – particularly where cycle lanes are under-used, she insists: “If you build the safe cycling infrastructure, they will come.”
