Italy’s EMIControls is launching what it describes as a world first: a snow-producing dust controller.

The V22Orca is the result of collaboration with Russian dust control specialists Boreas. The two companies have been working together to develop a system that can cope with the extremes of the Russian winter.

“They have a big problem in winter, as it’s not easy to use standard water,” said EMIControls’ dust division manager Alverman Soster. “We are already in the Russian market and we recognised that we needed to develop something specific for the Russian market.”

Once the temperature dips below zero, the V22Orca uses nucleator nozzles to produce a stream of wet snow, which the company says works exceptionally well in controlling dust, as it sticks to the snow crystals.

EMIControls was able to tap into the expertise of its parent company, TechnoAlpin, which it describes as the world’s number one manufacturer of snow-making machinery, used to help create ski runs in mountain resorts.

The new kit uses an 18.5kw turbine designed by EMIControls, together with an 11kw pump. The system can work down to temperatures as low as -25C.
