Connected products, which allow data to be collected and analysed remotely, are changing the design and operation of equipment, according to Italian drive specialist Bonfiglioli.

“Diagnostics can allow us to see why there was a failure or abnormal usage. Then we can start to predict what will happen and suggest maintenance activities,” said Bonfiglioli chief technical officer Andrea Torcelli.

At Bauma 2019, Bonfiglioli will be presenting examples of how industrial internet of things (IIOT) technology is already being used. One of these is the F620 gearbox for excavators, where health monitoring indicates what the next failure will be and the type of component that will need replacing.

Developing the use of IIOT is one of Bonfiglioli’s key investment priorities, said Torcelli. “Intelligent products will be worth more,” he says. “We do not have evidence of how they will be worth more, but we know it will be the case.”
