Donaldson’s PowerCore Edge filter: more compact than ever

Donaldson’s PowerCore Edge is the company’s third generation of PowerCore air filter engines for off-road applications, designed to fit in smaller spaces and deal with higher temperatures. Emissions advances mean that there are more devices fighting for room, and creating heat, under the bonnet.
“Air filtration is critically important, especially for off-road engines,” says Al Hovda, general manager of Engine Air Systems for Donaldson. “As little as 10 grammes of dust can do damage to a diesel engine, which means that it would need an overhaul.”
The PowerCore Edge has the smallest footprint of any in the PowerCore range, thanks to its filter medium which is 65% smaller than a standard pleated filter and can be installed vertically or horizontally. Donaldson has used a new sealing technology on the filter so that it can take heats of up to 100C.
The PowerCore Edge incorporates a pre-cleaner which removes the heaviest dust before it reaches the filter, prolonging the filter’s life. The pre-cleaner separates into two parts for ease of cleaning, so that clogging can be dealt with in dusty, off-road situations.
For heavy dust environments, OEMs may choose to add a scavenge vacuum system for more efficient removal of dust and debris from the pre-cleaner. When a scavenge system is used, PowerCore Edge’s design allows the scavenge line to remain in place while servicing the pre-cleaner or the primary filter, improving serviceability.
