Equipment manufacturing in the U.S. provides 2.8million jobs and $791bn in sales activity each year, according to a report released by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).
Manufacturing associated with the construction, mining and agriculture industries has an enormous impact on the U.S. economy, according to the report. The equipment manufacturing industry also contributes $288 billion to GDP annual and provides $53.7bn annually in federal, state and local taxes.
The total number of direct jobs supported by equipment manufacturers is over 476,800. Texas ranks substantially above all other states in terms of direct contributions of the equipment manufacturing industry, with over 73,057 jobs, $7.5bn of labour income and $13.2bn in value added in GDP each year.
Other states with exceptionally large direct contributions include Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa, each with more than 28,000 jobs directly attributable to equipment manufacturers.
“Every day the 2.8million men and women of our industry roll up their sleeves and go to work building state-of-the-art equipment in communities across the country,” said Dennis Slater, president of AEM. “This report tells the story of the people who make America by building the combine the farmer uses to harvest his corn and the excavator the construction worker uses to build our roads and bridges.”
