American Eagle’s Hybrid Power Source will cut your carbon footprint

Truck accessory manufacturer American Eagle has launched the Hybrid Power Source (HPS) system: a self-contained hydraulic power source which produces 13.5kWh of output. The HPS uses automotive-grade lithium ion battery technology from Volta which American Eagle says makes the units robust … providing up to eight hours of run time and more than 10 years of life.
By using the HPS to operate hydraulic equipment, rather than a machine’s engine, fleet operators can reduce their carbon footprint. Using the HPS allows for quiet and emission-free operation, says American Eagle. It also reduces fuel consumption, decreases engine maintenance costs and helps meet idling requirements, since the engine no longer needs to be switched on when the equipment is operating.
“The capabilities of the HPS will enable fleets to upfit their vehicles to meet sustainability targets, while providing the power needed to operate their hydraulic equipment,” says Tim Worman, product manager at Stellar Industries, of which American Eagle is a division.
The HPS can be charged in a number of ways. Its integrated 48V alternator means it can be charged from the engine on site or while driving to the next job site. It can also be charged via its standard 120V, 15-amp connection while parked for the night … or when engine charging is unavailable. At 48V, the unit qualifies as low voltage which makes it a more attractive proposition for fleet operators.
The HPS can operate in extreme heat or cold with internal thermal protection to protect the energy packs’ core temperature. It also has a heating system that will automatically activate to keep the unit’s core temperature above the minimum needed for charging.
American Eagle has designed the unit so that it can be easily retrofitted. Weighing only 360kg and measuring 1194mm long x 533mm wide x 711mm high, the system can be mounted in a variety ways depending on the truck.
